Hillary Clinton's Big Night

Posted by: Bruce Braley on 8/27/2008

Day 4.  Today started with a great turnout at the Iowa Delegation breakfast, where we welcomed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as our keynote speaker.  Speaker Pelosi took time from her hectic schedule, where she is the Permanent Chair of the Democratic National Convention, in addition to her official duties as Speaker of the House.

Speaker Pelosi began by expressing her concern for the people of who have been devastated by the tornados and by the historic flooding we have faced.  She declared her support for additional disaster assistance funding and promised to work with the delegation to see that additional funding is approved in September.  She also talked about her upcoming trip to , and spoke to Congressman Loebsack, Congressman Boswell and I about her schedule on that date.

She also thanked for showcasing all of the great Democratic candidates in the January caucuses, and called on us to leave the Convention in unity and work for change by electing Barack Obama to be our next President.

We were also fortunate to hear from Senator Dick Durbin from , and had the honor of introducing Barack Obama to a national audience for the first time at the Democratic Convention in I had the great pleasure of sharing the podium with Senator Durbin on Memorial Day in 2007 at the located on the grounds of the Rock Island Arsenal.

I also had the pleasure of appearing with Senator Durbin this morning at the Food Bank of the Rockies for a “Send Hunger Packing” event hosted by ’s Second Harvest.  Senator Durbin was the captain of our Congressional team packing food for delivery to food banks around   The team we competed against was captained by actor Ben Affleck, and included Maria Menounos from Access Hollywood, Actress Alicia Witt (Vanilla Sky), and actor Justin Bartha (National Treasure films).

As a member of the Hunger Caucus, I was honored to take part in this event.  When the tornado and flooding devastated the First District of Iowa, I saw trucks from America’s Second Harvest and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank delivering food to people in need.  My cousin, George Braley, is a Senior Vice President of Public Policy for ’s Second Harvest, which is soon changing its name to “Feeding America.”  September is Hunger Action Month, and I encourage everyone to join me in supporting the food banks that serve the people of , particularly in the wake of the huge demands placed on food banks due to our recent natural disasters.

Last night’s Convention was electrifying.  Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner got things rolling with the keynote speech, and Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer had the roaring with his no-holds-barred populist message.  The video tribute to Senator Hillary Clinton was very moving, and she closed the evening with a speech that many people agreed was one of the best she has ever given.  Her call for unity was clear, her support for Barack Obama was unequivocal, and she challenged Democrats everywhere to remember that we have been fighting for the principles that define our party, not simply the person who will be our nominee.

After the convention, I attended a reception honoring Senator Harkin for his work on the Farm Bill along with Tom and Ruth and Dave and Terri Loebsack.  I then went to the Iowa Delegation reception hosted by Marcia and John Frew and Verizon at the Rialto Café.

Tonight will be the final night at the before moving to INVESCO Field for Senator Obama’s highly-anticipated acceptance speech.  It should be another exciting evening, with speeches by Former President Bill Clinton, Vice Presidential Nominee Joe Biden, and the formal balloting to nominate our candidates.

Day 3: Michelle Obama and Ted Kennedy Rock the House

Posted by: Bruce Braley on 8/26/2008

Day 3.  Last night the Convention officially kicked off with a great welcoming speech by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who set the tone for the convention with a call to unity and a call to action to elect Barack Obama as our next President.

Another highlight was when Senator Tom Harkin began his introduction of my former Congressman, Jim Leach, using American Sign Language.  My son, Paul, is studying ASL at West High School this year, and Senator Harkin has been the leading champion for Americans with disabilities.

Former Congressman Leach was eloquent and persuasive in explaining why he was breaking with his party at this critical moment in history to endorse a Democratic candidate for President, Barack Obama.  I had the opportunity to visit with Jim and wife, Deba, when Jim finished his press interviews.  They are always very gracious, and we were proud to have an Iowa Republican of Jim's stature speak at our National Convention in support of Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama closed the first night with a wonderful speech that gave us a deeper insight to her family background and values, included some humorous anecdotes about her relationship with Barack, and clearly defined her as a woman ready to help our country and her husband in the difficult day ahead.  If she were speaking at Coors Field instead of the , she would have hit a grand slam walk-off home run.  It was exciting to see her on the stage with their daughters, Malia and Sasha.

One of my favorite “Obama” moments came during a candidate forum in during the summer of 2007.  I received word that Senator Obama would like to speak with me in an RV behind the Hall at Hawkeye Downs.  As we were talking in the RV, his cell phone rang and he looked at it and said, “I’m sorry, Bruce, but I really have to take this call, it’s my daughter Malia.”  I assured him that her call was more important than our visit, and I got to eavesdrop as he had a charming conversation with his daughter.  When he hung up the phone, he said, “I’m sorry.  She’s going to the Beyonce concert tonight and she couldn’t wait to tell me about it.”  I don’t know about you, but I want a President who understands that making family a priority is the best way to keep in touch with why you wanted to be President in the first place.

For many people, the highlight of the first night was the moving video tribute to Senator Edward Kennedy, and his surprise appearance at the convention where he reminded everyone of the causes that have defined our party and brought common purpose to our diverse Democrats throughout his long career in public service.  I hope that his inspiring message will bring healing where needed and inspire Democrats across the country to come together to for change.

After the convention, I ran into ABC newsman Harry Smith (Good Morning America).  I introduced myself by telling Harry that one of my high school football teammates (Sam DeVilder) played with him on the Central College National Championship football team in 1974.  We had a good visit about and how people were coping with the flooding and tornados.  Harry is one of those rare people who come across as warm and genuine in person as he does on television.

Day 2: Let the Convention Begin

Posted by: Congressman Bruce Braley on 8/25/2008

Day 2.  I received my official credentials this morning to allow me onto the floor, where the main convention proceedings will take place.  The floor pass is printed on 100% recycled paper and has a picture of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco.  We also learned that the delegation will be seated up front on the right side of the stage.

I spoke last night at a Welcome Reception with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and some of the top candidates featured in our "Red-to-Blue" program.  Two of the candidates I introduced were from the host state of Colorado:  Betsy Markey, who is running in Colorado-04, and Jared Polis, who just won a contested primary to replace Mark Udall in Colorado-02.

I also spoke to the Speaker and her staff about her upcoming trip to on September 8th to visit areas ravaged by the tornado and the flooding, in anticipation of a second supplemental funding bill for disaster relief that we intend to pass in September.  This is a high priority for everyone in the delegation, and I'm grateful that she has made time in her busy schedule to make this important trip.

The delegation kicked off the Convention last night with a great reception featuring Senator Harkin and Harold Schaitberger, President of the International Association of Firefighters.  We got together again this morning for breakfast, which was hosted by Sen. Harkin.  Our featured speaker was Sen. Amy Klobachar from Minnesota, who proudly identified herself and Sen. Harkin as 2/3 of the Slovenian Caucus in the Senate.

After a series of meetings this morning, the delegation boarded buses for a lunch hosted by Congressman Boswell's daughter, Cindy, and her husband, Gregg Brown, at their home in Denver.  I'm speaking tonight at 5 p.m. at the Official Convention Watch Party, which is taking place at the Convention Center to allow those without credentials to experience some of the excitement of the convention while watching it on a big screen TV.  Other speakers today at the Watch Party include the Mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin, who is a Co-Chair of the Convention, and Andrew Romanoff, the Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives.

Then it's off to the for the opening night of the Convention.  I'm excited to hear Michelle Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senator Ted Kennedy.  Tonight's post-convention activities include a reception for the Iowa Delegation at Union Station and a Salute to Speaker Pelosi, with performances by Tony Bennett, John Legend and James Taylor.

It's been great getting to spend time with the other members of the Iowa Delegation, particularly those from the First Congressional District.  The First District Delegates are George Dixon (Dewitt), Jacob Krapfl (New Vienna), Wayne Laufenberg (St. Donatus), Helen McClain (Dubuque), Arlene Prather-O'Kane (Cedar Falls), and Kathleen Weber (Dubuque).  Tod Bowman (Maquoketa) is an Alternate Delegate.  Mayor Bill Gluba (Davenport) is an At-Large Alternate.  Richard Machacek (Winthrop) is a DNC Member.  Each member brings a unique life experience and perspective to the Convention, and I'm proud to be here to share the experience with them.

Greetings from Denver!

Posted by: Congressman Bruce Braley on 8/24/2008

The alarm went off at 3:30 a.m. this morning at my home in Waterloo.  Welcome to the glamorous world of a Superdelegate!

My flight left Iowa at 6:00 a.m. and I'm posting this shortly after arriving in Denver.  Signs of the Convention are everywhere in Denver from the airport to Downtown.  The city is buzzing over yesterday's Vice Presidential "reveal" of Senator Joe Biden from Delaware.

Senator Biden graciously appeared with me at two separate events during my 2006 Congressional Campaign, and I spent quite a bit of time with him and members of his family at various campaign events leading up to the Iowa caucuses.  I believe that Senator Biden helps balance the ticket for a number of reasons.  His extensive foreign policy experience will be critical during the challenges we face ahead.  His long service in the Senate - where he would serve as the presiding officer - will be invaluable to improving relations between Congress and the White House.  His compelling life story and the unspeakable personal tragedy he endured will help him identify with the needs of all Americans.

My schedule today is very full.  It includes a "Welcome to Denver" reception for all convention delegates, a dinner for House members at the home of Rep. Diana DeGette, a DCCC reception with Speaker Pelosi and our top House candidates (I will be introducing our candidates as Co-Chair of the Red-to-Blue program), and a kick-off reception for the Iowa delegation.

That's all for today.  I'll be back tomorrow with a recap of today and a preview of the first official day of the Convention.
